Vardan Asatryan
I gladly accepted the offer to write a preface for the catalog of Vardan Asatryan’s personal exhibition in Los
Angeles and I was especially excited for two reasons:
First of all, Vardan was one of my best students during the six years he spent at the Institute of Arts and
Theater and he graduated in 1986 with a diploma of honors. The second reason is that after graduating from
the Institute, Asatryan made very quick progress and became one of the best young artists of our time. I like
Vardan’s drawings; they are multicolored and flexible. His paintings are special because of their peculiarity, and
their ability to attract immediately and touch the hearts of viewers.
The range of his paintings is very wide: movies, theater, paintings, and designing art. He has been a member
of Artists’ Union of Armenia since 2000 and participated actively in all types of exhibitions in the republic.
Vardan Asatryan had his personal exhibitions in the capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires, Prague, Paris, and in
many exhibitions of artists of theaters and movies in Armenia. The artist’s paintings are also in some private
collections. In almost all exhibitions his works were noticed and admired by the audience. Vardan is also
notable as a theater stage designer. In 1998 he designed the sets for the play “Return to Sorento” and in 1999
he designed the sets for the play “The Unwanted Man” in the theater named after G. Sundukian. In 2004 he
restored the decorations to Minas Avetisyan’s ballet “Gayane” saving Minas’ specific color solution. In 2001 he
participated in the exhibition dedicated to 1700 years of acceptance of Christianity in Armenia with beautiful
thematic works.
Since 1975, Vardan Asatryan has been working in the State Opera and Ballet Academic Theater named after
A. Spendiaryan as an artist-designer.
Knowing Vardan Asatryan as an excellent artist his coming exhibition in Los Angeles is anticipated to be a
complete success.
I wish him excellent health and new victories in his creative life.
